40 is the new 30

ok,that may be debatable but one thing is clear. at 40, you are no longer considered a kid. i remember once being the “young pup” the “rookie” and all that. no more. something changed a few years ago when i started noticing that all of my favorite athletes were now younger than me…by a lot. i have come to accept the fact that i am clearly and adult now, some might even say middle-aged (not me however). i’ve pretty much given up on my dream of becoming a major league baseball player. i keep waiting to feel older and become more mature and grownup-ish and i just don’t think i’m there. i still like video games, keeping up with current music, taking in an occasional concert, sledding and skating with the kids. when will i know to start yelling at the neighbor boys who are riding their bikes across my yard? (ok, i've done that). when do i load up the medicine cabinet with multi-vitamins? when do i start buying sensible shoes? start aggressively watching my cholesterol? eat a diet high in bran and fiber? i can’t say i feel 40, although i certainly don’t feel 22. i have pulled a muscle getting out of bed and the years have caused an expanding forehead and added bulk to certain parts of my frame. the good news? no noticeable ear hair or andy rooney eyebrows. i think it’s pretty much everyone’s goal to live as long as they can and without birthdays it just isn’t possible. so, as i enter my 4th decade i have taken a realistic approach. i may not be what i once was but i’m better in many ways (i’ll not use the fine wine analogy here). i have a great family, surrounded by great friends and am so blessed it’s impossible to feel depressed. so..c’mon 40. i’m ready…bring it.

Guess what - I don't feel almost 66 either. I don't think our brains age nearly as fast as our bodies!
